IMG_5128       IMG_5129     Apologies for the orientation of these 2 photos,  What a splendid book by the Norwegian writer Karl Ove Knausgaard – Winter.  His book Autumn came out a while ago, now Winter, and I’m sure Spring and Summer are sure to follow.  Just collections of kind of random essays appropriate to the season.  Excellent – and thought provoking.  Plus beautiful paintings.

Laces of Ipswich January 4, 2017

A great find – this book, The Laces of Ipswich, The Art and Economics of an Early American Industry by Marta Cotterell Raffel is perfect for combining my interests in history, genealogy, and economics.  I am only marginally interested in lace making in that it relates to weaving…..but this is a thoroughly researched picture of an industry in early New England and just maybe some of my ancestors!

Rose Wilder Lane May 20, 2016

RoseWilderLane01   Rose Wilder Lane – Laura Ingalls Wilder’s daughter was an experienced editor and novel writer.  Much has been written about her role in the writing and publishing of her mother’s books.  This mother/daughter combination has given so much pleasure to millions of readers with the Little House on the Prairie series on pioneer life in the America Mid-West.

willa cather Willa Cather, 1873-1947

I am currently reading a book of selected letters by this author.  It is a very  thick and fascinating book.  I am enjoying it immensely.   She is of my maternal grandparents generation.  I wonder if they read her books as they were published.  I wonder if my parents did.  I read a few of them years ago and now I want to reread some of them.  If I recall correctly I chose one for my book group in Ireland but it was not a popular choice.  Maybe her books are more for an American audience.  O Pioneers is one of her better known works and reflects her experiences living in Nebraska, her home growing up and her family base for many years.  She is possibly best known as the author of the Middle West.

Sperry Light House New Haven Ct Sperry Light, New Haven Ct

A few years ago I posted a blog about Armstrong Sperry, an author whose books inspired me many years ago.  Armstrong Sperry the author was born in New Haven Ct in 1897.  Now I find that a number of my ancestors were named Sperry and lived in New Haven.  Am I distantly related to one of my favorite authors?  Research to be continued.

Larry McMurtry Larry McMurtry --

Today is Larry McMurty’s birthday.  He is 79 – approximately 6 months older than I am at 78..  He is one of my favorite authors.  He is having an interesting life and his books certainly reflect his life and interests.  Following are a couple of references.

from Wikipedia

Career[edit]

McMurtry has won the Jesse H. Jones Award from the Texas Institute of Letters on three occasions; in 1962, for Horseman, Pass By; in 1967, for The Last Picture Show, which he shared with Tom Pendleton‘s The Iron Orchard; and in 1986, for Lonesome Dove. He has also won the Amon G. Carter award for periodical prose in 1966, for Texas: Good Times Gone or Here Again?.[4][5] In 1964 he was awarded a Guggenheimgrant. In 1960, McMurtry was also a Wallace Stegner Fellow at Stanford University, where he studied the craft of fiction under novelist Wallace Stegner and alongside a number of other writers, including Ken Kesey,Peter S. Beagle, Robert Stone, and Gordon Lish. McMurtry and Kesey remained friends after McMurtry left California and returned to Texas, and Kesey’s famous cross-country trip with his Merry Pranksters in a day-glo painted school bus ‘Further‘ included a stop at McMurtry’s home in Houston, described in Tom Wolfe‘s New-Journalistic book The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. At the time (1964), McMurtry was also a Lecturer in English at Rice University. His students were entertained with stories of Hollywood and the filming of Hud for which he was consulting.

McMurtry has been a regular contributor to The New York Review of Books[6] and is a past president of PEN.[7][8][9]

In 1986, McMurtry received the Peggy V. Helmerich Distinguished Author Award. The Helmerich Award is presented annually by the Tulsa Library Trust.
