This blog is mainly about knitting. However, whenever books get mentioned on other blogs I tend to jump right in and comment and then do a lengthy entry on my own blog. Maybe you can guess that librarian is one of the hats I used to wear. Currently I am working hard on learning to play 2 instruments – the recorder and the clarinet. So occasionally there will be entries re music making. And for outdoor interests from April to September, add lawn bowling.
Intersting to check family knitting history. My mother was a knitter – mittens, a ski sweater for me – and her grandmother was a knitter too. I have her old metal needles, size 1. She made many black mittens for her grandchildren. They lasted forever; my brothers and I had a pair.
My stepfather’s family were knitters also. As a boy, he cranked a little machine that made the top and foot of socks for WWI; his mother started the socks, turned the heels and did the toes. She was a Red Cross volunteer too, a re-knitter. The Red Cross accepted all knitting done for WWII, balackavas, socks, vests, nats, etc. Some were so badly knitted that they could not be sent overseas. Grandma B. raveled them and reknitted the wool. I think the Red Cross needed quite a few reknitters, as they never refused a donation, no matter how awful.
I put my reply under the introduction to this blog.
Hullo Janet
I don’t know if you remember me, Marjorie, I met you a couple of years ago at a weaving exhibition in Dalkey. It was there that I told you of the online group, that you write about. I have just been reading your blog about the ’sketchbook’ workshop, and looking at your picture about the Dundrum, I am in Dublin at the moment, going home on Wednesday, but I intend to continue reading your blog.
Regards
Marjorie
